BCHL Bulletin: Silverbacks bring in Foley for 2022-23, Penticton makes a pair of deals, and more!

Foley commits to Salmon Arm for 2022-23

The Salmon Arm Silverbacks have signed 2004-born defender CJ Foley for the 2022-23 BC Hockey League season. He is committed to the College of the Holy Cross for September 2023.

Foley, a native of Hanover, MA, had five goals and 14 points in 23 games with South Shore Kings 18U AAA Prep this past season. He added nine goals and 31 points in 22 prep school games at Thayer Academy.

Vees make trades for Tinling and Brunette

The Penticton Vees made a pair of trades on Friday, acquiring 2003-born forward Dovar Tinling and 2002-born defender Ben Brunette.

To pick up Tinling, the Vees sent future considerations to the Hawkesbury Hawks of the Central Canada Hockey League. In the deal to get Brunette, Penticton sent 2003-born forward and future considerations to the Powell River Kings.

Tinling, a product of Pointe-Claire, QC, finished the 2021-22 season with Des Moines of the US Hockey League, posting 12 goals and 25 points in 39 games. He started the year with a goal in 14 NCAA games at the University of Vermont.

Brunette spent 2021-22 with the USHL’s Waterloo Blackhawks and tallied a goal and two assists in 15 games. The University of Massachusetts-Lowell commit from North Bay, ON played in Powell River in 2020-21, posting 10 points in 20 games.

Driscoll signs with Glasgow of the EIHL

25-year-old goaltender Zach Driscoll (21-4-0, 1.90 goals-against average, .933 save percentage, four shutouts in 26 games with Penticton in 2015-16) signed a contract with the Glasgow Clan of the UK’s Elite Ice Hockey League for 2022-23.

Driscoll, who hails from Apple Valley, MN, turned pro with the Toledo Walleye of the ECHL in March. He played three games and finished with a 1-2-0 record, a 3.70 goals-against average, and a .913 save percentage.

He wrapped up a five-year NCAA career with the University of North Dakota this past season. Driscoll posted a 22-11-1 record to go along with a .908 save percentage and a 2.34 goals-against average in 34 games with the Fighting Hawks.

Iacobellis inks an extension with Asiago

Forward Steven Iacobellis (35 goals, 65 assists in 149 games with Salmon Arm, Cowichan Valley, and Penticton from 2010-13) has signed an extension for 2022-23 with Asiago of the ICE Hockey League, which is a professional league based in Central Europe.

Iacobellis, a 28-year-old from Port Coquitlam, BC, had 18 goals and 45 points in 33 games for Asiago during the 2021-22 season, his third playing in Europe.

Welsh signs an extension with Trois-Rivières

Halifax, NS native Connor Welsh (17 goals, 38 assists in 113 games with Alberni Valley and Trail from 2016-18) will return to Trois-Rivières of the ECHL in 2022-23 after signing a one-year extension with the Lions.

The 24-year-old forward spent the last four seasons playing U SPORTS hockey at Dalhousie University, where he tallied seven goals and 48 points in 81 games. He turned pro with Trois-Rivières in March and posted two points in 11 ECHL games.

Brandt is back in Cardiff in 2022-23

Forward Riley Brandt (42 goals, 40 assists in 176 games with Trail and Vernon from 2012-17) will return to the Cardiff Devils of the EIHL for the upcoming season.

The 25-year-old from Trail, BC, played 10 games with the Grant MacEwen Griffins of U SPORTS this past season, scoring seven goals and three assists before heading overseas to the Devils in January. With Cardiff, he posted two goals and two assists in 27 games.

Thompson commits to Ohio University for this fall

Forward Hollander Thompson (no points in three games with Langley in 2017-18) has committed to Ohio University of the American Collegiate Hockey Association for this September.

Thompson, a 2001-born native of Langley, BC, put up 12 goals and 30 points in 53 games with the Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Aurora Tigers in 2021-22.

Newell goes to Hungary for the upcoming season

Forward Patrick Newell (16 goals, 31 assists in 56 games with Penticton in 2014-15) signed a deal for 2022-23 with Fehérvár AV19 of the ICE Hockey League.

The 26-year-old from Thousand Oaks, CA had 21 goals and 51 points in 42 games with Stjernen of Norway’s Fjordkraft-ligaen this past season.
