Trail Smoke Eaters: Graduating players and eligible returnees

The Trail Smoke Eaters finished in the eighth spot in the Interior Conference during the 2021-22 BC Hockey League season. The Smokies faced the powerful Penticton Vees in the first round and were knocked out in five games.

Trail has seven players committed to NCAA Division I schools and three players aging out.

Trail’s general manager and head coach Tim Fragle has seven forwards up front, five defenders on the back end, and two goaltenders eligible to come back in 2022-23. Fragle will also have seven 20-year-olds next season and it will be a very tough decision to let go of one of them.

These numbers will likely change as players move to other leagues like the Western Hockey League, US Hockey League, or North American Hockey League. They may drop down to junior B, be sent away in trades, retire, or wind up committing to college before September and don’t return to their BCHL clubs.

The depth chart is based on the league going with a 24-player roster next season and coaches going with 14 forwards, eight defenders, and two goaltenders.
