The 2024-25 British Columbia Hockey League regular season schedule is now out. For the Powell River Kings, their schedule takes them to many different cities. However, there are some teams the Kings won’t face.
The Kings won’t face any of the Alberta-based BCHL teams. They won’t play Trail at home or on the road — but they will face the Smokies in Abbotsford, B.C. at the annual BCHL Showcase. Powell River also doesn’t travel to Penticton, Vernon, or Cranbrook.
The Kings’ schedule sees them face the Vancouver Island teams several times. They also face their royal counterparts from Prince George four times.
This article profiles the Kings’ 2024-25 schedule. We’ll start with how they begin and end their season.
Beginnings and endings
Powell River opens the regular season at home. The Kings host the Victoria Grizzlies on both Sept. 20 and 21. The last time Powell River opened its season at home was Sept. 23, 2022.
During the 2022-23 season, the Kings opened their season against the Nanaimo Clippers. In 2023-24, Powell River opened its season on the road against the now-defunct Merritt Centennials.
Like this year, Powell River has hosted Victoria in past home openers. In 2018, the Kings hosted the Grizzlies on Sept. 8 and won 5-3.
The Kings end their regular season in Prince George. On Mar. 29 and 30, the Kings play their final two games against the Spruce Kings.
In October, Powell River hosts Prince George for a pair of games. The last time the teams played each other was in October 2023.
Back then, the Kings and Spruce Kings played each other in Seattle at the Kraken Community Iceplex as part of the BCHL Showcase. In that game, Powell River was the host team. The last time the Kings traveled to Prince George was in February 2023.
Facing the Coastal East and West Divisions
Powell River’s first game against Cowichan Valley is on Sept. 27 and the next night, the Kings play their first game against the Nanaimo Clippers. Powell River’s first trip to Victoria is on Oct. 19. The following day, the Kings play their first game against the Alberni Valley Bulldogs.
The Kings meet each Vancouver Island team seven times during the 2023-24 season. The Kings’ last home game is on March 22 against the Capitals.
Powell River’s first match-up against Langley is on Oct. 4. The Kings’ first take on Chilliwack on Nov. 1 and then, four days later on Nov. 5, Powell River plays its first game of the season against the Surrey Eagles.
On Nov. 8, the Kings host the visiting Coquitlam Express for the first time. Powell River will play each Coastal East Division (formerly the Mainland Division) team four times.
Unique matchups
The Kings play five games each against Cranbrook and the Interior West teams. On Oct. 12, the Kings host the visiting Bucks. Powell River last hosted Cranbrook in December 2023 and the Bucks won 3-2. Powell River doesn’t make its way to the East Kootenays this season after Cranbrook moved to the Interior East Division with the five Alberta teams.
On Nov. 30, the Kings welcome the visiting Vernon Vipers before hosting the Penticton Vees a day later. Like Cranbrook, Vernon and Penticton won’t see Powell River come to town in 2024-25. The Kings visit the Salmon Arm Silverbacks on March 14 and then head south down Highway 97 to West Kelowna to play the Warriors on March 15.
