Chiefs pick up Rizzo from Coquitlam

The Coquitlam Express made a sizeable trade on Monday, sending 2001-born forward Massimo Rizzo to the Chilliwack Chiefs for 2001-born forward Arlo Merritt and future considerations.

Rizzo, who was selected in the 7th round, 216th overall by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2019 NHL Draft, has 43 goals and 80 assists in 132 BCHL games over the last three seasons. He was third in scoring with the Express in 2019-20 with 44 points in 42 games.

Merritt is entering his sophomore BCHL season after putting up 14 goals and seven assists in 48 games with the Chiefs in 2019-20. He is committed to Ohio State University for next fall.

Express acquire Murphy-Johnson from Cowichan

The Express also added another piece to its blueline on Monday by acquiring 2002-born defenseman Jackson Murphy-Johnson from Cowichan Valley for future considerations.

It’s the third time this off-season that Jackson-Murphy has been traded after moving from Trail to Grande Prairie of the Alberta Junior Hockey League on June 1 and then from the Storm to Cowichan Valley on June 29.

The second-year defenseman had a goal and four assists in 38 games with the Smoke Eaters as a rookie in 2019-20.

Salmon Arm nabs rookie Mack from Wenatchee

The Salmon Arm Silverbacks swung a deal with Wenatchee to acquire 2000-born forward Sullivan Mack in exchange for future considerations.

The Cornell University commit from Anchorage, Alaska had 44 goals and 26 assists in 34 games of US High School hockey with Kimball Union Academy in 2019-20.

Mack also played one game with the Kenai River Brown Bears of the North American Hockey League as an affiliate player but didn’t score any points.

Smokies trade for Ross

The Trail Smoke Eaters have acquired 2001-born forward Justin Ross from the Brooks Bandits of the AJHL for future considerations.

Ross, who’s from Calgary, notched six points in 42 games with Brooks this past season.

Jost signs extension with Avalanche

Forward Tyson Jost (65 goals, 84 assists in 97 games with Penticton from 2014-16) has signed his qualifying offer with the Colorado Avalanche. The contract covers the 2020-21 season and is worth just over $874,000.

Jost, 22, had eight goals and 15 assists in 67 games with the Avalanche in 2019-20.

Fogarty inks UFA deal with Buffalo

Forward Steven Fogarty (33 goals, 48 assists in 60 games for Penticton in 2011-12) has signed a one-year contract worth $700,000 with the Buffalo Sabres as an unrestricted free agent.

Fogarty, 27, tallied 37 points in 54 games last season with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League last season.

Shiplo and Martin sign ECHL contracts with Jacksonville

Defenseman Luke Shiplo (five goals, 39 assists in 50 games with Vernon in 2014-15) and forward Craig Martin (44 goals, 54 assists in 137 games with Trail, Vernon, and Alberni Valley from 2012-15) have both signed contracts for the 2020-21 season with the Jacksonville IceMen of the ECHL.

Shiplo, 25, had 20 points in 40 games with Jacksonville and six points in 17 games with the Wichita Thunder during 2019-20.

The 25-year-old Martin notched 21 points in 41 games with the IceMen in 2019-20 as well as two points in seven games with the Adirondack Thunder.

Miska signs extension with Colorado Avalanche

Goaltender Hunter Miska (53-21-5 with a 2.03 GAA, a .924 SV%, and seven shutouts in 80 games with Penticton from 2013-15) has signed a two-year contract with the Colorado Avalanche worth $725,000 at the National Hockey League level.

Miska, 25, spent most of the 2019-20 season in the American Hockey League with the Colorado Eagles. He finished with a 16-6-4 record, a 2.48 GAA and a .924 SV%, and two shutouts in 26 games.
