BCHL Today: Kagan is off to Utica College, Warriors bring in Rubin for 2021-22, and more!

 

Kagan commits to Utica College for 2021-22

Powell River Kings forward Josh Kagan has committed to Utica College to play NCAA Division III hockey starting this September.

The 2000-born Winnipegger had 12 goals and 18 points in 19 games for the Kings during the 2020-21 BC Hockey League pod season.

Warriors add Rubin for the 2021-22 season

The West Kelowna Warriors announced the commitment of 2003-born defenseman Tyler Rubin for the 2021-22 season.

Rubin, who’s committed to Princeton University for Sept. 2022, had six goals and 23 points in 30 US high school prep games for Belmont Hill School in 2019-20.

The Natick, MA product didn’t play any games this past season at Belmont because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Coghlan and the Golden Knights eliminate Minnesota in game seven

Defenseman Dylan Coghlan (no points in two games with Nanaimo in 2013-14) and his Vegas Golden Knights advanced to the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs on Friday with a 6-2 win over the Minnesota Wild in game seven of their series.

Coghlan, 23, played 29 games for Vegas during the regular season and had six points, but didn’t see any action in the series against the Wild.

Bast signs in Finland for 2021-22

Defenseman Gabe Bast (12 goals, 42 assists in 71 games with Penticton from 2014-17) has signed with KalPa of Liiga, which is the top league in Finland.

The contract is for 2021-22 but includes club options for the following two seasons. The 24-year-old spent the last four seasons with the University of North Dakota, putting up nine goals and 32 points in 106 games.

Hunt commits to Carleton

Defenseman Andrew Hunt (no points in one game with Victoria in 2017-18) has committed to Carleton University and U SPORTS hockey for this September.

The 2000-born blueliner from Vancouver had two assists in five games with Melfort of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League this past season.

Brian's been involved in the BCHL in a variety of capacities for 17 years. From 2002 to 2012, he served in several roles around the Merritt Centennials organization, including as team president, board member, beat writer, colour commentator, webmaster, media and communications coordinator and marketing assistant. He's been writing about the BCHL since 2008 and served as colour commentator on the TSN 1040 broadcasts in 2012-13. BCHLNetwork is one of Brian's many passion projects that he balances around his full-time job as an instructor in the Radio Arts and Entertainment Program at BCIT in Burnaby.
