BCHL Bulletin: Katz commits to Cornell, Cents trade Boldt to Weyburn, and more!

Katz commits to Cornell for 2023-24

West Kelowna Warriors goaltender Justin Katz has committed to Cornell University to play NCAA hockey starting in September 2024. The Warriors noted that Katz will return to West Kelowna for 2022-23.

The 2004-born netminder from Mont-Royal, QC was 12-5 with a 2.45 goals-against average, a .921 save percentage, and two shutouts in 20 games with the Warriors this past season, his first in the BCHL.

Cents send Boldt to Weyburn of the SJHL

The Merritt Centennials have traded 2003-born defender Sam Boldt to the Weyburn Red Wings of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League for future considerations.

Boldt, from Regina, SK, posted a pair of assists in 25 games for the Cents after being acquired from Camrose of the Alberta Junior Hockey League at the Jan. 10 trade deadline.

He posted two goals and four points in a dozen games with the Kodiaks before being dealt to Merritt.

Tivey signs with Cowichan Valley for 2022-23

The Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League’s transactions page notes that 2004-born defender Nate Tivey has been transferred from the Hamilton Kilty B’s to the Cowichan Valley Capitals for the 2022-23 season. The GOJHL is a junior B league in Ontario.

The Burlington, ON native notched three goals and 24 points in 42 games for Hamilton as a rookie during the 2021-22 season. He also played one game as an affiliate for the Georgetown Raiders of the Ontario Junior Hockey League.

Brian Wiebe

Brian's been involved in the BCHL in a variety of capacities for 17 years. From 2002 to 2012, he served in several roles around the Merritt Centennials organization, including as team president, board member, beat writer, colour commentator, webmaster, media and communications coordinator and marketing assistant. He's been writing about the BCHL since 2008 and served as colour commentator on the TSN 1040 broadcasts in 2012-13. BCHLNetwork is one of Brian's many passion projects that he balances around his full-time job as an instructor in the Radio Arts and Entertainment Program at BCIT in Burnaby.
