Clippers add Ben Walter as skills coach

Ben Walter (37 goals, 69 assists in 100 games with Langley from 2000-02) is a new skills coach for the Nanaimo Clippers.

The 36-year-old has spent the last two seasons as the head coach of the North Island Silvertips of BC Major Midget League.

Walter will remain with the Silvertips while working with the Clippers.

Four BCHL players on The Hockey Writers mock NHL Draft

The Hockey Writers website conducted a mock of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft and it saw four players with BCHL ties selected.

  • Merritt defenseman Talon Zakall (6th round, 165th overall)
  • Penticton recruit Stefano Bottini (6th round, 182nd overall)
  • Chilliwack forward Ethan Bowen (7th round, 210th overall)
  • Powell River defenseman Davis Pennington (7th round, 212th overall)

Spruce Kings draw Show Home Lottery winner

The Prince George Spruce Kings announced the winner of their Show Home Lottery on Friday. Prince George’s Raylene Lupul’s ticket was drawn from 11,000 entries. The lottery is the biggest fundraiser for the Spruce Kings.

Fundraising effort saves University of Alabama-Huntsville hockey

With help from alum Cam Talbot of the Calgary Flames, the University of Alabama-Huntsville hockey program has been reinstated for the 2020-21 season after more than $500,000 was raised.

UAH shut down the hockey team last week as a result of the financial fallout due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Victoria Grizzlies forward Marty Westhaver is set to join the Chargers this September.

The UAH men’s hockey roster includes a number of BCHL alumni:

  • Lucas Bahn (West Kelowna)
  • Ben Allen (Penticton)
  • Daneel Lategan (Langley)
  • Max Coyle (Prince George)
  • Dayne Finnison (Victoria)
  • Mark Sinclair (Chilliwack)

Brian Wiebe

Brian's been involved in the BCHL in a variety of capacities for 17 years. From 2002 to 2012, he served in several roles around the Merritt Centennials organization, including as team president, board member, beat writer, colour commentator, webmaster, media and communications coordinator and marketing assistant. He's been writing about the BCHL since 2008 and served as colour commentator on the TSN 1040 broadcasts in 2012-13. BCHLNetwork is one of Brian's many passion projects that he balances around his full-time job as an instructor in the Radio Arts and Entertainment Program at BCIT in Burnaby.
