Clippers add recruit Mahar for 2021-22

The Nanaimo Clippers announced the commitment of 2003-born forward Nick Mahar for the 2021-22 BC Hockey League season.

Mahar hails from Sydney, Nova Scotia, and is playing for his hometown Rush U18 team this season. He has 16 goals and 26 points in 18 Nova Scotia U18 Hockey League games.

He was selected in the 10th round, 115th overall by the South Shore Lumberjacks in the 2019 Maritime Hockey League draft, but decided to join the Clippers instead.

BCHL alumni included in NCAA free agent ranking

The Athletic senior NHL prospects writer Corey Pronman came out with his list of top college and European free agents for 2021 on Tuesday and five BCHL alumni are on it.

#9 – Minnesota State University defenseman Akito Hirose (20 goals, 102 assists in 208 games with Salmon Arm from 2016-20)
#11 – University of North Dakota forward Jordan Kawaguchi (120 goals, 122 assists in 213 games with Chilliwack from 2013-17)
#22 – Boston College forward Mike Hardman (39 goals, 33 assists in 58 games with West Kelowna in 2018-19)
#25 – University of North Dakota goaltender Adam Scheel (29-12-0, 2.08 GAA, .927 SV%, 3 SO in 45 games with Penticton in 2017-18)
#26 – Quinnipiac University forward Odeen Tufto (25 goals, 40 assists in 57 games with Vernon in 2015-16)

Christopoulos joins AHL’s Henderson Silver Knights

Goaltender Billy Christopoulos (22-22-0 with a 3.05 GAA, a .906 SV%, 3 SO in 46 games with Alberni Valley in 2014-15) has signed a professional tryout with the Henderson Silver Knights of the American Hockey League.

The 27-year-old from Raleigh, North Carolina is 6-4 with a 2.13 goals-against-average, a .918 save percentage, and one shutout in 11 games with the Indy Fuel of the ECHL this season.

This is the first time in Christopoulos’ career he’s been called up to the AHL. The Silver Knights are the minor league affiliate of the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights.

Bonar inks deal with Indy Fuel

Goaltender Sean Bonar (38-15-0, 2.60 GAA, .908 SV%, 6 SO in 59 games with Penticton from 2008-10) has found a landing spot after he was released by the ECHL’s South Carolina Stingrays on Sunday.

Bonar, 30, has signed with the Indy Fuel. The Delta, BC product is 0-5-1 with a 4.06 goals-against-average and a .866 save percentage in nine ECHL games split between Kansas City and South Carolina this season.

Saether commits to play Division III hockey

2000-born defenseman Brenden Saether (three assists in 57 games with Surrey and Powell River from 2017-19) has committed to Wentworth Institute of Technology for this September.

The Abbotsford, BC product will head to play NCAA Division III hockey after putting up three goals and nine points in 63 games with Swan Valley of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League over the last two seasons.
