BCHL Today: Newhook and Canada top Russia, Bottini and Fust officially named to Swiss team, and more

 

Newhook and Canada win 1-0 over Russia in pre-tournament game

Forward Alex Newhook (60 goals, 108 assists in 98 games with Victoria from 2017-19) and Team Canada shutout Russia 1-0 in its lone pre-tournament game at the 2021 World Junior Hockey Championship.

Newhook didn’t register any points in the win and Canada opens the tournament on Boxing Day against Germany.

The 19-year-old, who’s currently playing NCAA hockey for Boston College, was selected in the first round, 16th overall by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2019 NHL Draft.

Bottini and Fust officially named to Swiss World Junior team

2002-born forwards Stefano Bottini of the Penticton Vees and Ray Fust of the Chilliwack Chiefs were officially named to the roster for Switzerland at the World Juniors on Wednesday.

Bottini had a goal and four assists in 10 games with the Vees during the BCHL exhibition season. Fust notched a goal and an assist in six exhibition games for Chilliwack.

The Swiss open their tournament on Christmas Day against Slovakia.

Mullin transfers from Cornell to Vermont

Forward Tristan Mullin (63 goals, 63 assists in 114 games with Powell River from 2015-17) has transferred from Cornell University to the University of Vermont.

Mullin, 24, will join the Catamounts in time for the winter semester. He was set to be the captain at Cornell this season.

The Cartwright, Manitoba product has 49 points in 89 games with the Big Red over the last three seasons.

Brian Wiebe

Brian's been involved in the BCHL in a variety of capacities for 17 years. From 2002 to 2012, he served in several roles around the Merritt Centennials organization, including as team president, board member, beat writer, colour commentator, webmaster, media and communications coordinator and marketing assistant. He's been writing about the BCHL since 2008 and served as colour commentator on the TSN 1040 broadcasts in 2012-13. BCHLNetwork is one of Brian's many passion projects that he balances around his full-time job as an instructor in the Radio Arts and Entertainment Program at BCIT in Burnaby.
