Express sign Green for 2021-22

The Coquitlam Express announced the signing of 2003-born forward Blake Green for the 2021-22 BC Hockey League season.

Green, who hails from Anaheim, CA, played 51 games for the Anaheim Jr. Ducks 18U AAA in 2020-21 and posted three goals along with eight assists. His dad is Vancouver Canucks head coach Travis Green.

Eagles bring in Gilles as assistant coach

The Surrey Eagles have brought Colton Gillies (one assist in three games with Surrey in 2004-05) on board as an assistant coach for the upcoming season.

Gillies is from White Rock, BC, and last played during the 2019-20 season with Dinamo Riga of the Kontinental Hockey League. The 32-year-old played 154 NHL games during his 12-year pro career.

Wild add Oberle as a recruit for 2021-22

The Wenatchee Wild announced the commitment of 2001-born defenseman and University of Minnesota-Duluth commit Brett Oberle for this season.

The Woodbury, MN native spent the last two seasons with the Minnesota Magicians of the North American Hockey League, putting up six goals and 30 points in 85 games.

He was slated to head to UMD this fall but that’s been deferred to September 2022.

McPhalen hired as director of hockey ops for Aldergrove Minor Hockey

Ken McPhalen was unveiled as the director of hockey operations for the Aldergrove Minor Hockey Association. McPhalen was an assistant coach for the Nanaimo Clippers from 2018-20.

The 60-year-old was an assistant coach for the Delta Ice Hawks of the Pacific Junior Hockey League as well as the Aldergrove U21 team in 2020-21.

Foley inks a deal with Wheeling of the ECHL

Defenseman Matt Foley (one goal, eight assists in 38 games with Merritt in 2014-15) has signed a one-year extension for 2021-22 with the Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL.

Foley, 26, had a goal and six points in 36 games with the Nailers as a rookie in the 2020-21 season. The Longmeadow, MA wrapped up a four-year NCAA career at Yale in 2020.

Brian Wiebe

Brian's been involved in the BCHL in a variety of capacities for 17 years. From 2002 to 2012, he served in several roles around the Merritt Centennials organization, including as team president, board member, beat writer, colour commentator, webmaster, media and communications coordinator and marketing assistant. He's been writing about the BCHL since 2008 and served as colour commentator on the TSN 1040 broadcasts in 2012-13. BCHLNetwork is one of Brian's many passion projects that he balances around his full-time job as an instructor in the Radio Arts and Entertainment Program at BCIT in Burnaby.
