Let’s get familiar with the BCHL power rankings. The goal is to understand how teams are performing offensively, defensively, on the power play and penalty kill, and in goal, compared to other teams.
For those of you familiar with my Kootenay International Junior Hockey League power rankings from years ago, this is similar, but now the math is a bit different.
Let’s use goals scored (or offence) as our first example. The Sherwood Park Crusaders, at the point of grabbing the numbers, had the most potent offence with 4.53 goals scored per game. They receive 10 points. West Kelowna Warriors scored the least at 2.27 goals per game, they receive zero points. Then thanks to the glorious powers of the Excel Gods, each team is ranked in proportion to those two numbers. The Brooks Bandits score just below Sherwood Park at 4.47, earning 9.71 points.
This type of scoring goes on through each category — offence, defence, power play, penalty kill, and goaltending — ending in an overall score totalling each category. Fifty is the highest overall score a team can get, while zero is the lowest.
With all that being said, to start off the 2024-25 season, Brooks is BCHL’s top team, followed by the Cranbrook Bucks and the Crusaders.
