Newhook, Manson, and Toews win Stanley Cup

Three BC Hockey League alumni are 2022 Stanley Cup champions as members of the Colorado Avalanche after a 2-1 game six victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday night.

Forward Alex Newhook (60 goals, 108 assists in 98 games with Victoria from 2017-19) had four assists in a dozen games for the Avalanche and defender Devon Toews (17 goals, 59 assists in 102 games with Surrey from 2011-13) posted five goals and 10 assists in 20 playoff games.

Meanwhile, blueliner Josh Manson (22 goals, 49 assists in 111 games with Salmon Arm from 2009-11) finished with three goals and five assists in 20 post-season appearances for Colorado.

Fontana commits to Hobart College

Coquitlam Express graduating forward Kahlil Fontana has committed to playing NCAA Division III hockey at Hobart College this September.

The 21-year-old from Duncan, BC notched eight goals and 27 points in 50 games with the Express this past season. He added three points in seven playoff outings.

Egli jumps to France for 2022-23

Defender Brandon Egli (17 goals, 49 assists in 162 games with Trail, Victoria, and Vernon) has signed a contract with Courchevel-Méribel-Pralognan of FFHG, Division 2, which is the third tier of hockey in France.

Egli, a native of Victoria, BC, split 2021-22 between IK Guts of Sweden’s HockeyTvåan and Weserstars Bremen of Germany’s Regionalliga. Over the course of 30 games between the two leagues, the 27-year-old posted a dozen goals and 31 points.

Silverbacks bring back Lentz as director of marketing

The Salmon Arm Silverbacks announced a contract extension for director of marketing Kierra Lentz on Saturday.

Lentz, who has a diploma in broadcast news from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, took over from Russell Day after he resigned in March 2021.
