Dyck commits to the University of Massachusetts
According to New England Hockey Journal writer Mark Divver, 2004-born Cranbrook Bucks forward Tyson Dyck, who’s ranked 110th among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting for the 2022 NHL Draft, has committed to the University of Massachusetts.
Per Divver’s tweet above, the Abbotsford, BC product is expected to join UMass this September. Dyck was outstanding for the Bucks in 2021-22, finishing fourth in BCHL scoring with 34 goals and 75 points in 54 games. He was named to the BCHL All-Rookie team and the First All-Star team.
Centennials bring in Spinale for 2022-23
The Merritt Centennials unveiled the commitment of 2004-born forward Ryan Spinale for the 2022-23 season.
The native of Plymouth, MA spent most of the 2021-22 season with the Boston Advantage 18U AAA team, putting up 28 goals and 46 points in 38 games.
He also played 14 games with the Advantage in the National Collegiate Development Conference and finished with two goals and eight points.
Vees pick up Tanner from Chilliwack
The Penticton Vees have acquired 2003-born forward Liam Tanner from the Chilliwack Chiefs. Tanner’s junior A rights are the future considerations to complete the trade on Jan. 3 which saw 2001-born defender Anthony Allepot go from the Vees to the Chiefs.
Tanner, from Langley, BC, had 10 goals and 27 points in 54 games for Chilliwack this past season after posting nine points in 20 games during the 2020-21 pod season. He added one assist in 11 playoff games this year.
Allepot, a commit to the University of Western Ontario, finished the season with two assists in 20 games for the Chiefs. He tallied a goal and 11 points in 27 games for the Vees prior to the trade to Chilliwack.
Wright goes from Prince George to Trine University
2001-born Prince George Spruce Kings defender Josh Wright has committed to Trine University to play NCAA Division III hockey this fall.
The Woodstock, ON native wraps up his BC Hockey League career with two goals and 11 points in 44 games with the Spruce Kings over the last two seasons. He added six assists in 10 playoff games this year.
Penticton adds a 16-year-old duo for 2022-23
2006-born forward Hiroki Gojsic and 2006-born defender Gabriel Guilbault have both signed with the Penticton Vees for 2022-23.
Gojsic, who is from Langley, BC, spent the 2021-22 season with St. George’s School U18 Prep of the Canadian Sport School Hockey League, scoring 29 goals and 51 points in 32 games. He also played one game with his hometown Rivermen as an affiliate.
Guilbault hails from Burnaby, BC, and spent his 2021-22 season in the CSSHL with the Burnaby Winter Club U18 Prep team. In 30 games, he had two goals and 20 points. He was a third-round pick of the Kelowna Rockets in the 2021 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft.
Nanaimo ships Mahoney to Navan of the CCHL
The Nanaimo Clippers have completed the future considerations from a trade with the Navan Grads by sending 2002-born forward Shaun Mahoney to the Central Canada Hockey League club.
The future considerations are from the Nov. 18 trade in which 2001-born forward Alex Johnston went from Navan to Nanaimo. Johnston played two games with the Clippers before jumping to Ottawa of the Ontario Hockey League in December.
Mahoney, who’s from St-Augustin-de-Desmaures, QC, notched two goals and six points in a dozen games for the Clippers this past season but didn’t play any playoff games. He also had an assist in the 2020-21 pod season as a rookie.
Trail trades Michaud to Fort McMurray of the AJHL
The Trail Smoke Eaters announced on Wednesday that they have traded 2002-born forward Connor Michaud to the Fort McMurray Oil Barons of the AJHL to complete the future considerations from a deal on Jan. 3.
That transaction saw the Smokies pick up 2001-born defender Kabore Dunn from the Oil Barons for 2003-born defender Chris Kobelka and futures, which turn out to be Michaud.
Michaud, who’s from Moncton, NB, put up 10 goals and 26 points in 69 games with Trail over the last two seasons. In 2021-22, he posted a respectable 24 points in 51 games as a sophomore for the Smokies.
Clippers send Kotylak to SJHL Humboldt
The Clippers also completed the future considerations portion of a trade with the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s Humboldt Broncos. In the deal, Nanaimo sends 2002-born forward Ben Kotylak to the Broncos.
Kotylak, who’s from North Vancouver, BC, is the futures from the deal which saw 2003-born goaltender Brett Mirwald transferred to the Clippers on Dec. 10. Mirwald signed with Waywayseecappo of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League a month later.
In 29 games since joining Nanaimo in a separate trade on Dec. 9 from the Calgary Canucks of the Alberta Junior Hockey League, Kotylak posted four goals and seven points. He had 13 points in 30 games with Calgary before the deal.
Olson commits to Missouri State University
Merritt Centennials forward Josh Olson will play college hockey in the American Collegiate Hockey Association this September. He is the lone player from last season’s Cents roster to collect a college commitment thus far.
The 2001-born forward from Salmon Arm, BC has committed to Missouri State University after totaling four goals and seven points in 45 games for the Cents from 2020 through to this past season.
Desbiens won’t return to Mulhouse in 2022-23
26-year-old forward Jonathan Desbiens (71 goals, 66 assists in 112 games with the West Kelowna Warriors from 2014-16) of Rosemere, QC was cut loose by Scorpions de Mulhouse of Ligue Magnus, which is the top league in France.
In 28 games with Mulhouse in 2021-22, he notched 12 goals and 30 points. Desbiens also got into seven games with the Iowa Heartlanders of the ECHL this season and put up four points. He also played one game with the Maine Mariners.

Eagles hire New as public address announcer
The Surrey Eagles announced the hiring of Jacob New as their public address announcer at the South Surrey Arena for the 2022-23 season. New, who’s a broadcast and online journalism student at BCIT, takes over from Charlie Black as Surrey’s PA announcer.
Demelo and Thompson traded in junior B blockbuster
Goaltender Dryden Demelo (1-0-0, 1.95 goals-against average, .933 save percentage in one game with Victoria in 2020-21) and forward Colten Thompson (two goals in eight games with Cowichan Valley in 2021-22) were traded from Kerry Park to Saanich as part of a massive seven-player deal in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League on Wednesday.
Demelo, a 2004-born netminder from Victoria, BC, was 12-20-0 with a 3.72 goals-against average, an .893 save percentage, and three shutouts in 34 games for Kerry Park in 2021-22.
Thompson, a 2002-born forward who also hails from Victoria, BC, started the season with the Islanders and posted 27 points in 19 games. He got into eight games as an affiliate with Cowichan before signing with La Ronge of the SJHL in January. He finished the season with four points in 14 games for the Ice Wolves.
