BCHL Bulletin: Eagles unveil alternate captains for 2022-23, Welsh leaves the ECHL for France, and more!

Eagles name Bongo and Galata alternate captains

The Surrey Eagles announced on Wednesday the two players who will serve as alternate captains for the 2022-23 season as 2002-born forward Cole Galata and 2003-born forward Jake Bongo will each have an ‘A’ on their jersey.

Galata, a product of Barrie, ON, is committed to Bentley University. Bongo hails from Ridgefield, CT, and is committed to Sacred Heart University. Both are entering their second season with the Eagles.

Bongo had 24 goals and 48 points in 53 games as a rookie for the Eagles in 2021-22 while Galata put up seven goals and 29 points in 51 games. In May, Surrey announced 2002-born defender Brody Gagno as its captain for 2022-23.

Welsh takes his game to France for 2022-23

Forward Tyler Welsh (31 goals, 62 assists in 108 games with Victoria and West Kelowna from 2015-17) has signed a contract for the 2022-23 season with Mulhouse of Ligue Magnus, which is the top pro league in France.

Welsh, a 25-year-old from Whistler, BC, had 25 points in 27 games at Long Island University this past season, his fifth in the NCAA. He signed with the ECHL’s Newfoundland Growlers in March and posted three points in nine games.

Massy leaves Nottingham for Glasgow

26-year-old defender Kevin Massy (21 goals, 72 assists in 157 games with Victoria from 2013-16) has signed with the Glasgow Clan in the UK’s Elite Ice Hockey League in France.

Massy, from Victoria, BC, spent 2021-22 split between French club Anglet of Ligue Magnus and the EIHL’s Nottingham Panthers. He had 22 points in 29 games with Anglet and nine points in 26 games with Nottingham.

Brian Wiebe

Brian's been involved in the BCHL in a variety of capacities for 17 years. From 2002 to 2012, he served in several roles around the Merritt Centennials organization, including as team president, board member, beat writer, colour commentator, webmaster, media and communications coordinator and marketing assistant. He's been writing about the BCHL since 2008 and served as colour commentator on the TSN 1040 broadcasts in 2012-13. BCHLNetwork is one of Brian's many passion projects that he balances around his full-time job as an instructor in the Radio Arts and Entertainment Program at BCIT in Burnaby.
