Eagles add Hunks to their blueline for 2022-23

The Surrey Eagles announced the addition of 2004-born defender Liam Hunks for the 2022-23 BC Hockey League season on Friday.

Hunks, who’s from Beaumont, AB, played 35 games with the Leduc Oil Kings U18 AAA of the Alberta Elite Hockey League in 2021-22 and posted eight goals and 24 points.

He also got into six games as an affiliate player for the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s Spruce Grove Saints, posting one assist.

Hunt joins the Stanley Cup champion Avalanche

The Colorado Avalanche on Friday announced the signing of defender Brad Hunt (20 goals, 69 assists in 122 games with Burnaby from 2006-08) to a two-year contract worth $762,500 per season.

Hunt, a 33-year-old from Maple Ridge, BC, is a veteran of 241 NHL games over the last nine seasons. He had three goals and 17 points in 50 games with the Vancouver Canucks in 2021-22.

Jones returns to Manitoba for two more seasons

Forward Nicholas Jones (46 goals, 79 assists in 100 games with Penticton from 2015-17) signed a new contract that keeps him with the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League for the next two seasons.

Jones, 25, hails from Edmonton, AB. He finished with 12 goals and 34 points in 60 games with the Moose in 2021-22, his third full season in the AHL.

Newton inks a deal for 2022-23 with Reading

Forward Max Newton (47 goals, 76 assists in 153 games with Trail and Cowichan Valley from 2014-17) signed a contract with the ECHL’s Reading Royals on Friday.

Newton, who hails from Vancouver, BC, potted three goals and eight points in 13 games with Worcester of the ECHL in 2021-22. He was traded to Reading last month.

The 24-year-old turned pro with the Railers after his NCAA season at Merrimack College ended in March. He also posted one assist in two games with Providence of the AHL after signing a pro tryout with the Bruins in April.

Taylor inks a contract with the EIHL’s Clan

Goaltender Ty Taylor (36-17-0, 2.38 goals-against average, .919 save percentage, eight shutouts in 60 games with Vernon from 2016-18) has signed with the Glasgow Clan of the UK’s Elite Ice Hockey League for 2022-23.

The 23-year-old native of Richmond, BC played 13 USPORTS games with Grant MacEwan University this season, posting a 1-11-0 record along with a 4.16G AA, an .890 SV%, and one shutout. He also played one game with the ECHL’s Orlando Solar Bears.
