Global TV sports reporter Jay Janower (nine goals, 11 assists in 30 games with Abbotsford in 1987-88) did a story on Wednesday on the Chilliwack Chiefs opening training camp and a number of league tidbits were included.
Janower noted that the BCHL’s Board of Governors is voting on Thursday to decide about playing an abbreviated season, expected to be 30-40 games long.
Other news to come from Janower’s story is that the league is resorting to a full pay-to-play model for this season as well as mandating the use of a full face shield for all players in 2020-21.

The Merritt Centennials have traded 2000-born goaltender Tanner Marshall to the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s Humboldt Broncos for future considerations.
Marshall, who’s from Kelowna, BC, had a 7-19-2 record with a 4.86 goals-against-average and a .882 save percentage with the Centennials in 2019-20.
The move leaves the Cents without an experienced back-up to starter Josh Dias, who was acquired via trade earlier this offseason.

In addition to trading Marshall, the Centennials added 2004-born forward Jacksenn Hungle for the upcoming season.
Hungle is from Victoria and had 27 points in 34 games with the Yale Hockey Academy Elite 15s of the Canadian Sport School Hockey League in 2019-20.
He also played two games with the Yale Academy Prep team as an affiliate player.

The Cranbrook Bucks have hired an equipment manager and trainer for their inaugural season in the BC Hockey League.
Mike Nelson, who is from Cranbrook, has five years of experience as an assistant equipment manager in the Western Hockey League and studied kinesiology at the College of the Rockies and the University of Lethbridge.

The Penticton Vees announced on Wednesday that their intrasquad game on Friday will be broadcast for free on HockeyTV at 5:30 pm.
The Vees annual training camp match-up is affectionately called the “Peaches Cup”.

Defenseman Derian Hamilton (two assists in four games with Powell River in 2014-15) has signed with the Nybro Vikings in the HockeyEttan, which is the third pier of hockey in Sweden.
Hamilton, from Port McNeil, BC, had 14 points in 22 games with Fayetteville of the Southern Professional Hockey League in 2019-20.
He also played 10 ECHL games between Reading and Newfoundland and posted one assist.

First Star: Trail forward Scott Jacklin tallied a goal and three assists in an 8-2 thumping of Merritt.
Second Star: Penticton goaltender Joel Rumpel made 32 saves in a 1-0 shutout win against Westside.
Third Star: Victoria forward Joel Lowry notched two goals and an assist in a 6-5 overtime win vs. Coquitlam.
Honourable Mentions: Langley forward Matt Ius had three assists. Powell River forwards Matt Garbowsky and Chad Niddery each scored a goal and two assists. Surrey forward Richard Vanderhoek had a goal and two assists. Salmon Arm forward Taylor Fauchoux posted a goal and an assist.
