Cents ship Benwell to Ontario

The Merritt Centennials made a big move on Thursday, sending 2000-born forward Evan Benwell to the Whitby Fury of the Ontario Junior Hockey League for future considerations.

The Toronto product had nine goals and nine assists in 28 games with the Cents after being acquired from Nanaimo early last December. He is a veteran of 136 junior A games in the BCHL, Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League and Ontario Junior Hockey League.

League strikes deal with InStat Hockey

The BC Hockey League announced a partnership with InStat Hockey on Thursday. According to the news release, InStat will provide all 18 BCHL teams with advanced stats and video for the 2020-21 season.

Also as part of the agreement, BCHL clubs will have access to InStat’s scouting platform which includes a database of players from around the world.

Clippers golf tournament extended to two days

Due to restrictions put in place by the provincial health authority, the Nanaimo Clippers have expanded their golf tournament from one day to two. The event takes place on August 14 and 16 at Cottonwood Golf Course in Nanaimo.

Thompson re-signs with Adirondack

Defenseman Blake Thompson (four goals, 22 assists in 47 games with Victoria in 2012-13) signed for a third season with the Adirondack Thunder of the ECHL.

Thompson, who is from Listowel, Ontario, has nine goals and 31 assists in 158 ECHL games with the Thunder from 2018-20.

Kellen Jones inks a deal in Sweden

Montrose, BC’s Kellen Jones (39 goals, 134 assists in 154 games with Vernon from 2007-10) signed a contract for 2020-21 to return to VĂ€sterviks IK of the Allsvenskan, which is the second tier pro league in Sweden.

The 28-year-old had 11 goals and 15 assists in 36 games with HC Thurgau in the Swiss League last season. Jones was an alternate captain for VĂ€sterviks IK in 2018-19 when he posted 30 points in 52 games.

24-year-old defenseman Riley Stadel (no points in one game with Penticton in 2011-12) has jumped from Podhale Nowy Targ in Poland to Újpesti TE of the Erste Liga, which has teams based in Hungary, Romania, and Austria.

Stadel had a goal and two assists in five games with Podhale Nowy Targ in 2019-20 after starting the season with RoKi of the second tier league in Finland. The Surrey native is entering his fourth season playing overseas.
