BCHL Today: Spruce Kings sign GM Hawes to a three-year extension, Vees trade for defenseman Arnott, and more

 

Hawes inks three-year extension in PG

The Prince George Spruce Kings put pen to paper on a contract extension for general manager Mike Hawes (28 goals, 41 assists in 47 games with New Westminster and Ladner in 1989-90) through the 2023-24 season. Hawes is into his 10th season with the Spruce Kings as GM and 16th overall with the organization.

The Prince George native is also the Spruce Kings alternate governor and was named BCHL executive of the year in 2019, leading the team to the Fred Page Cup, Doyle Cup, and runner-up spot at the National Junior A Championship.

Vees pick up defenseman Arnott from Ontario

The Penticton Vees have acquired 2001-born defenseman Grayson Arnott from the Oakville Blades of the Ontario Junior Hockey League for future considerations.

Arnott, who’s from Toronto, had seven goals and 20 assists in 51 games as a rookie with the Blades last season. He added three points in four playoff games.

He’s a graduate of St. Andrew’s College prep school, where he posted five goals and 54 assists in 131 games between 2017 and 2019.

Alumni earn NCAA conference awards

A number of BCHL alumni claimed weekly awards for the week ending Jan. 31 and monthly awards for January in the NCAA over the last week.

  • NCHC goaltender of the month: University of North Dakota goaltender Adam Scheel (Penticton Vees)
  • Hockey East player of the week: University of Connecticut forward Jonny Evans (Powell River Kings)
  • Hockey East rookie of the week: University of Connecticut forward Hudson Schandor (Surrey Eagles)
  • Atlantic Hockey player of the week: Bentley University forward Luke Santerno (Trail Smoke Eaters/Cowichan Valley Capitals)
  • Atlantic Hockey rookie of the week: Bentley University defenseman Drew Bavaro (Wenatchee Wild)
  • NCHC defenseman of the week: University of North Dakota defenseman Cooper Moore (Chilliwack Chiefs)
  • WCHA goaltender of the week: Bemidji State University goaltender Zach Driscoll (Penticton Vees)

Spruce Kings unveil third jerseys

The Prince George Spruce Kings unveiled an alternate jersey on Wednesday that is planned to be worn when games return. According to a news release, it’s the first time the Spruce Kings used navy in their jersey since the 2005-06 season.

Stief signs SPHL deal with Macon Mayhem

Defenseman Matt Stief (eight goals, 68 assists in 109 games with Prince George from 2014-16) has signed a contract with the Macon Mayhem of the Southern Professional Hockey League.

Stief, 25, spent the last four seasons playing NCAA hockey at Canisius College, where he had 60 points in 133 games.
