BCHL Bulletin: Martin inks extension in Alberni, Wild and Smokies add new recruits, and more!

Bulldogs ink Martin to five year extension

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs announced on Wednesday that general manager and head coach Joe Martin has signed a contract extension through the 2026-27 BC Hockey League season.

Martin, 41, is into his third season with the Bulldogs. In 130 games with Alberni Valley, the Kingston, ON product has compiled a 71-47-12 record.

He has seven years of experience in the BCHL as a GM and head coach, the first four with the Merritt Centennials and the last three with the Bulldogs. Martin was named BCHL coach of the year in 2018-19.

Martin served as an assistant GM and assistant coach in Merritt for four seasons before being promoted to GM and head coach prior to the 2015-16 season.

Wild recruit Ebbott for 2022-23 season

The Wenatchee Wild have signed 2004-born forward Jackson Ebbott of Encino, CA for the 2022-23 BC Hockey League season.

Ebbott has split the 2021-22 season between the Buffalo Regals 18U AAA and Sailsbury School. In 24 games with the Regals, he posted seven goals and 14 points. In 28 games with Salisbury, Ebbott posted four goals and a dozen points.

Smokies sign Spooner for next season

2004-born Kelowna, BC native Remy Spooner has committed to beginning his junior hockey career with the Trail Smoke Eaters in the 2022-23 BCHL season.

Spooner played 27 games with Okanagan Hockey Academy U18 Prep in the Canadian Sport School Hockey League this season. He finished the campaign with 13 goals and 30 points.

Canucks send Rempal to Abbotsford

26-year-old forward Sheldon Rempal (110 goals, 103 assists in 167 games with Nanaimo from 2013-16) was reassigned by the National Hockey League’s Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday. He currently has 23 goals and 48 points through 41 games in his first season with the American Hockey League’s Abbotsford Canucks.

The Calgary, AB product has 46 goals and 123 points in his four-year, 181-game AHL career with Abbotsford, Chicago, and Ontario. Rempal does not have a point in 11 career NHL games with Vancouver, Carolina, and Los Angeles.

Rocket signs Kaufman for remainder of 2021-22

25-year-old forward Max Kaufman (51 goals, 55 assists in 105 games with Langley from 2015-17) has signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Laval Rocket of the AHL.

The contract is for this season and the Pittsford, NY product will join the Trois-Rivières Lions of the ECHL. Over the last five NCAA seasons with Boston University and the University of Vermont, he had 22 goals and 54 points in 143 games.

Everblades nab Wyszmirski off ECHL waivers

Defenseman Craig Wyszomirski (eight goals, 28 assists in 54 games with Surrey in 2012-13) was claimed on ECHL waivers by the Florida Everblades from the Indy Fuel on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old product of Mahwah, NJ notched four assists in 24 games with Indy after signing with the Fuel at the end of December.

Perets named ECAC player of the year

Quinnipiac Bobcats netminder Yaniv Perets (25-8-2, 2.19 goals-against average, .918 save percentage, five shutouts in 37 games with Penticton in 2019-20) was named ECAC player of the year on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old from Dollard-des-Ormeaux, QC had a sparkling season for the Bobcats, posting a minuscule 0.89 goals-against average and a .952 save percentage to go along with a 20-4-2 record.

Brooks signs an ECHL pact with Trois-Rivières

Forward Zachary Brooks (15 goals, 22 assists in 77 games with Cowichan Valley and West Kelowna from 2019-21) has signed a standard ECHL player contract with the Trois-Rivières Lions.

Brooks, 20, played with the Grande Prairie Storm of the Alberta Junior Hockey League in 2021-22, and the Bromont, QC product finished with 22 goals and 50 points in 60 games.

Ward turns pro with the Maine Mariners

Kamloops, BC native Tyler Ward (31 goals, 26 assists in 86 games with Merritt from 2015-17) turned pro on Wednesday, signing a contract for the remainder of 2021-22 with the Maine Mariners of the ECHL.

The 22-year-old spent the last four seasons in the NCAA with the University of New Hampshire and the University of Denver, compiling 29 goals and 68 points in 129 games.

Grand Rapids reassigns Barton to Toledo

22-year-old defenseman Seth Barton (six goals, 27 assists in 51 games with Nanaimo and Trail from 2016-18) was reassigned by the Detroit Red Wings from Grand Rapids of the AHL to Toledo of the ECHL on Wednesday.

The native of Kelowna, BC hasn’t found the scoresheet through two ECHL games with the Walleye this season. He has made five AHL appearances for the Griffins and scored one goal.

Betts signs amateur tryout with Colorado of the AHL

Flesherton, ON product Kyle Betts (45 goals, 44 assists in 98 games with Powell River from 2015-17) has signed an amateur tryout with the Colorado Eagles of the AHL following a five-year NCAA career at Cornell University.

The 24-year-old Betts, a gold medal winner with Canada West at the 2015 World Junior A Challenge, wrapped his college career with 17 goals and 48 points in 125 games for the Big Red.

Zieky traded in the ECHL from Idaho to Greenville

Forward Chase Zieky (28 goals, 26 assists with Langley and Salmon Arm in 2015-16) was traded in the ECHL from the Idaho Steelheads to the Greensville Swamp Rabbits on Wednesday.

Zieky, a 25-year-old from Avon, CT, posted a dozen goals and 17 points in 38 games with the Steelheads this season after signing with them last October.
