Express pick up Gurney from Trail

The Coquitlam Express announced on Monday the acquisition of 2000-born forward Justyn Gurney from the Trail Smoke Eaters for future considerations.

Gurney, who’s from Delta, BC, didn’t score any points for the Smokies during the 2020-21 training season. He was added to Trail’s roster in October.

The left winger is a veteran of 175 Western Hockey League games with Calgary, Regina, and Everett. His career WHL totals include 10 goals and 21 assists.

Cents add Allen to their blueline

The Merritt Centennials have signed 2003-born defenseman Tristan Allen for the 2020-21 season.

The Kamloopsian started the year with the Thomspon U18 AAA Blazers and had a goal in four games before COVID-19 restrictions came into effect in November.

Allen played for the Blazers in 2019-20 and posted 22 points in 40 games as a 16-year-old.

Spruce Kings lose Lakoduk to school, add Makow from U18 AAA

The Prince George Spruce Kings lost 2000-born forward Darwin Lakoduk to the NCAA as he has started his career at American International College a semester early.

He was fifth in scoring on the Spruce Kings during the BCHL training season with five assists in seven games.

The product of Edmonton was picked up by PG in a trade with Penticton last June. He had 23 points in 59 games split between the Vees and the Victoria Grizzlies in 2019-20.

The Spruce Kings filled Lakoduk’s spot on the roster with the addition 2004-born Linden Makow.

Makow, who’s from Vanderhoof, BC, spent the 2019-20 season with the Cariboo U16 AAA Cougars and notched 23 goals and 14 assists in 26 games.

He also got into six games with the U18 AAA Cougars but didn’t score any points.

BCHL alum shuffled as NHL regular season nears

With the National Hockey League season set to begin on Wednesday, a number of former BCHL players were either waived, sent to the minors, or outright released on Monday.

Boucher transfers from UAA to Northern Michigan

Defenseman Tyrell Boucher (six goals, 31 assists in 58 games with Cowichan Valley in 2019-20) has transferred from the University of Alaska-Anchorage to Northern Michigan University.

The 21-year-old from Grande Prairie, Alberta committed to UAA in November 2019. This past November, the Seawolves opted out of the 2020-21 Western Collegiate Hockey Association season due to COVID-19.

During the summer, the school announced it was cutting men’s hockey and three other sports. A campaign is underway to raise funds to save the UAA men’s hockey team.

Moon joins the Oilers as radio play-by-play voice

Cam Moon, who served as the play-by-play voice of the Nanaimo Clippers in the mid-to-late 1990s is the new radio play-by-play announcer for the Edmonton Oilers.

Moon, 50, has served as the voice of the Western Hockey League’s Red Deer Rebels for the last 22 seasons. He also had a 60 game career as a goaltender in the WHL from 1989-91.
