BCHL Today: Duerr and McGregor-Bennett score first BCHL goals, three suspensions handed out, and more!

 

Duerr gets his first BCHL goal

2002-born Vernon Vipers defenseman Sam Duerr scored his first BCHL goal at 8:07 of the third period in a 4-3 win over the West Kelowna Warriors to close out the 2020-21 season.

Duerr’s goal gave the Vipers a 4-1 lead and was the eventual game-winner after the Warriors stormed back to get within a goal of tying it. The University of Maine commit was playing his 16th BCHL game as a rookie on Vernon’s blueline this season.

Johnston suspended two games by the BCHL

Powell River Kings defenseman Brody Johnston was suspended for four games by the BC Hockey League Department of Player Safety on Sunday for receiving his second fighting major and game misconduct as well as his second gross misconduct penalty of the season.

The penalties were assessed at the 16:28 mark of the third period of Saturday’s 7-2 loss to the Coquitlam Express.

The 2003-born defenseman had a goal and four points in 14 games for the Kings this season. He will miss Powell River’s first four games of the 2021-22 regular season as a result of the suspension.

 McGregor-Bennett scores first career BCHL goal

2003-born Prince George forward Kilian McGregor-Bennett of Surrey posted his first BCHL goal on Sunday in a 4-2 win over Nanaimo. The goal was the eventual game-winner and it came with 8:34 remaining in the first period.

McGregor-Bennett was playing his 17th career BCHL game and finished with a goal and two assists on the season. He played four games with the Spruce Kings as an affiliate player in 2019-20 but didn’t register any points.

Campbell handed three-game suspension by BCHL DOPS

Coquitlam Express defenseman Matthew Campbell has been suspended for three games for his role in the fight with Powell River’s Brody Johnston on Saturday.

At 16:28 of the third period, Campbell was handed a five-minute major for fighting along with a game misconduct and gross misconduct. The fighting major plus game misconduct was the 2003-born blueliner’s second instance of those penalties this season.

He will be out of the line-up for the first three games of Coquitlam’s 2021-22 season. Campbell had a goal and eight points for the Express this season.

Cents forward Astorino tossed for two games

Merritt Centennials forward Blake Astorino has been suspended for two games for a blow to the head during a 4-3 loss to Chilliwack on Saturday, the BC Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced on Sunday.

The incident occurred at 15:57 of the second period. Astorino was assessed a major penalty for a blow to the head and a game misconduct. The 2001-born forward will have to sit out the first two games of the Centennials’ 2021-22 season.

Three Stars of the Night ⭐⭐⭐

First Star: Surrey forward Christian Fitzgerald had a goal and two assists in Surrey’s 5-1 win over Coquitlam.

Second Star: Prince George forward Christian Buono notched a goal and two assists as the Spruce Kings doubled Chilliwack 4-2.

Third Star: West Kelowna forward Marcus Joughin had three assists in the Warriors’ 4-3 loss to Vernon.

Honourable Mentions: Grizzlies forward Andrew Amousse scored a pair of goals. Eagles forward Holden Katzalay, Victoria forwards Ellis Rickwood and Chase McInnis, and Penticton defenseman Ben Wozney each posted a pair of assists.
