Grizzlies land Ride from Oakville of the OJHL in a three-way deal

The Victoria Grizzlies swung a three-team, two-player trade that sees 2003-born defenseman Declan Ride end up in BC’s provincial capital.

First, the Grizzlies acquired 2001-born defenseman Cole Weinger from the Carleton Place Canadians of the Central Canada Hockey League for future considerations.

Weinger hails from El Segundo, CA. He had three assists in six games as a rookie with the Canadians during the CCHL’s Development Scrimmages last fall.

The Grizzlies then flipped Weinger along with future considerations to the Oakville Blades of the Ontario Junior Hockey League for Ride.

Ride, who’s from Mississauga, ON, didn’t play anywhere during 2020-21 because COVID-19 pandemic restrictions in Ontario cancelled the season. Despite that, he was ranked 201st among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting for the 2021 NHL Draft.

He didn’t hear his name called by an NHL team during the draft but is committed to Miami University (Ohio) for Sept. 2022. Ride posted six assists in 42 games as a rookie with Oakville in 2019-20.
